How to play the OATLALI(South African chess game) the original variant

Hello guys today I'm going to show how to play OATLALI, the original variant. As I said before it have three variables, so this is the original one or the main one.

for me this the best variant and it is not that different from the second one, basics are the same, principles are the same, just few rules are been changed there and there.

Okay before i get to the point, I would like to thank you so much for your support. Please keep on visiting this blog and share with other.. lots of thanks.

              HOW TO PLAY OATLALI

At the start of the game each player has to place his or her 22 pieces on thier respective first three rows, starting with the king and follow by any other pieces one-by-one or they can use the game's own custom formation in the setup. After both players have done then the game starts with the white player making the first move.
Just like Shogi a player can use the opponent's piece which was previously captured.

Every piece beside the king have two-sides, black and white sides allowing players to be able to use each other's pieces that they have previously captured. For example if white captured black healer on the next turn s(he) can flip that piece over by the white side and place it on the board as his or her own piece. Also a piece that come from outside is now called a new-piece.

A PLAYER CAN MAKE UP TO 3 MOVES:
           1. A new- piece may be placed on                     an empty square.
           2. A piece may be moved on an                         empty square.
           3. A piece may capture an                                 opponent's piece.

THERE ARE 4 WAY TO GET OUT OF CHECK:
           1. The king may be moved on an                        empty square that is not being                      attacked by the enemy piece.
           2. A new-piece may be placed                            between the king and the                                attacking enemy piece to block                    the attack.
            3. A piece may be moved between                     the king and the attacking                             enemy piece to block the attack.
             4. The piece that is attacking the                      king can be captured.

There are pieces that gets more stronger or aggressive when they are in enemy territory, and gets back to normal when they are out from enemy territory.
Though the objective of this game is to checkmate the opponent's king, but it is not the only way to win. When the other player is out of Wizards, Rooks and spears from the board the game is over, doesn't matter if s(he) have those pieces in his or her possession outside the board.

                PIECE AND MOVEMENTS

The king movies one step vertical horizontal and diagonal.

General moves two steps vertical horizontal and diagonal.

Wizard moves vertical and diagonal without any restriction of each move, and gets the ability to move horizontal with no restriction of each move when it's in enemy territory.

Horse moves vertica like a knight in chess one step horizontal then one step diagonal or one step vertical then one step diagonal. It can also jump over other pieces.

it is no different from the chess rook, it moves vertical and horizontal with no restriction of each move, but when it's in the enemy territory it gets the ability to move one step diagonal.

Healer is very similar to bishop in chess,it moves diagonal with no restriction of each move, when it's in the enemy territory it gets the ability to move one step vertical and horizontal.

Spear move like a Rook, vertical and horizontal with no restriction of each move. The interesting part about this piece is that it can not move without flying over one piece, everytime it makes a move it has to fly one one piece, friendly or enemy. It is not allowed to fly over any enemy spear or more than one piece. It cannot by any means to another spear.

Pawn moves one step vertical or forward and wait for the next turn to make a move. It can only attack a enemy piece that is in front of it. Unlike the second style of OATLALI (NDIRA STYLE) here the pawn gets promoted when it's in the seventh rank. When it promotes it has to be crawn by a friendly pawn that was previously captured by an enemy, then it's gets the same abilities as a general two steps vertical, horizontal and diagonal.

That is how to play OATLALI the original variant.

  1. This looks interesting. Not many games use a drop rule, and the stronger in enemy territory bit seems interesting too.
